With a sight glass on the column as normally done you will see this. Are you talking about a column with out sight glasses ???? Maybe helpful there

Unless you have very large external downcomers, they would be permanently flooded.

Is there a flow difference between external and internal downcomers ?

No sight glass, just looking for a simple way to know if the plate is full.

No but most undersize downcomers. I built internal weir downcomers in my Flute MkII and you could see the amount coming down from the above plate was quite significant

Can a sight glass in the external downcomer give useful information?

If you lower the bottom of the sight tube to the level of the lower plate you will know the level of the distillant on that plate and will be able to see the amount of reflux. You will know all that you really need to know, you will how ever not be able to see the pretty bubbles..........................just sayin'

One thing you won't be able to tell from that design is whether or not you are running to fast and causing entrainment or to slow and the plate collapsing. The sight glasses on the column do help you out in how fast or even how slow you can run the column depending what kind of results you want. Entrainment and smearing would be my main reason to have the sight glasses on a plated column. Of course seeing all that alcohol bubbling is cool too
My Grandpa used to say don't argue with an idiot because, he will just drag you down to his level then beat you with experience. DD

The plate drawing was for an example. I'm using a pot and elevated thumper with reflux and a downcomer. I installed the drip sight glass and a different dephlegmator and did a test run with water. Everything worked except for a coolant leak or two. Now I'm going to build a liquid level sight glass for the thumper. Someone gave me a great way to build one using compression fittings and boiler sight tube. The drip sight glass will have to be redone, it was made from unapproved material.

Might work on a thump tower.
But sight glasses in the column will let you know all you need to.
A good idea, but it has its problems.
