Plated Column vs Thumpers

Postby Drunken Unicorn » Sat Feb 01, 2014 5:30 am

Good Day Mates,

I'm currently running a pot still with an inline thumper. I'm working on building a second thumper so I can make traditional navy rum. My end goal is to make a high ester rum. While I like the idea of 2 thumpers, I'm not against exploring other options.

Recently, a still manufacturer told me that I can get the same esters from a plated still as I could from a thumper. So...my question is. Do you think you can produce a high ester rum using a plated column? If so, will it be as strong in flavor as a double thumping?

Cheers,

DU

A plated column is essentially a stack of thumpers, but with adjustment possible. I believe you'd find you could dial in the flavor to what you wanted and am certain you can get a full flavored rum from a plated still.

agree with heartcut on a stack of thumpers but it is a stack of thumpers with a knob that allows you to dial in what you want. I wish I had one.

I guess that settles it, I'll be building a 2 plate column next.
