WTK What size tubes in 4" dephlagmator?

Postby Foxfire » Thu Oct 03, 2013 7:51 am

I was able to score some 4" copper from a local scrap yard and thought I would build a dehplagmator to go on top of 4 4" bubble plates, wonder if 1/2 or 3/4" tubes be best and how many? I was thinking of 5 1/2 inch tubes.

I run five 3/4" nom. copper tubes 6" long. Many run four 1" tubes. I can knock down a full 5500 watts with no blow by.

I did 9, 1/2" tubes 6" long yes it is over kill but i barely put any water through and it knocks everything down with lots of usable area for the vapor to go through.

My still has a two stage dephleg. Total length 9 inches and 7,1/2 inch vapor passes with two outlets for the water giving me a 60 / 40 split. I have run this on a 3 inch valved flute at 240volts and 20 amps, and still have not needed the second stage and still it requires very little flow.

Thanks for advice, decided I will go with 5 3/4 tubes. Was thinking of Harris stay silv 15 brazing rods to set the tubes to the plates then some lead free solder to set the plates to the pipe and then try and do the flange the some time

this thread of mine on how to do a "easy shotgun" also works just as easy on a Dephlag
all soft solder and easy to do :)

thicker is better on the end plates, i did one today using some discs from some 4" and it worked sweet
they clamp up nicely to ferrule or if doing to another easy flange you just wrap the gasket in teflon tape a little if needed

Sounds like our set up is the same with the same results, I also don't throw a lot at it after I reach equalibrum.
I started my liquid diet and so far it seems to be working! I've already lost two days.
