Small reflux still question

Small reflux still question

Postby Panda » Sat Mar 23, 2013 9:52 pm

My T500 started leaking so binned the columb and welded a 2inch ferrule to the top of the boiler hat and am making up this little reflux to go on the boiler. I intend to plumb the top of the liebig to the top of the coil in the columb and just throttle before the liebig keeping outgoing water temp at 55c. Also I am going to stuff stainless scrubbers in the columb.

I know its not an ideal design but is there Anything I am doing wrong that will prevent it being on par or better then the t500?

Have you got some sort of coil or other cooling to provide reflux within the packed column, otherwise it will just be a glorified pot still.
Not that there is anything wrong with pot stills, just that they don't have packing.
It will no longer be a 'small reflux still question'

Cheers.

Yea there is a coil from the 2 inch elbow to half way down the column. I intend for cooling water to into the bottom of the liebig, out the top of the liebig then into the top of the coil.

Looks like your column is half coil which means with that short of column a lot of what you reflux will go back into the boiler and not work at equalizing.
I started my liquid diet and so far it seems to be working! I've already lost two days.

Yeah.+1 on that. Ditch the column internal coil and let the packing to its thing.

Bushman, would this be fixed by making the column longer with another section of pipe between boiler and column?

Wvshiner; would I get enough reflux just being air cooled?

Air cooled wouldn't work at all. Would just add a longer section of packed column under this head. Just test run this one it my be cool for rum or whiskey. Not for a pure neutral. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Also you will need to be able to restrict /slow down the flow to the reflux condenser and keep the product at full flow. Was just a thought after I posted and you may know that already.
