Single vessel(BM) mashing & stripping ongrain/Crash cooling

Postby micah-jon » Mon Jun 20, 2016 7:37 pm

I’m currently awaiting delivery of a 150L insulated BM boiler with agitator. I plan on using this as a single vessel to mash, ferment and strip on the grain in. The boiler and jacket are both pressurised with PVRs.

FYI I plan on using propylene glycol as the HEX.

Obviously I need to cool the mash down into the 30’s to pitch my yeast. I would like to know everyones opinion regarding crash cooling the mash. Is this really necessary or could you just leave the mash to cool down overnight or for a day. Given the fact that the boiler is fully sealed no airborne yeast or contaminants can get near it.

I’m aware I could run cool water through the jacket to crash cool the mash. However I plan on using glycol for stripping so I don’t want to be emptying/refilling the glycol all the time.

What does everyone else with a similar all in one vessel do?

No hurry at all. Just want to make the best product I can.
I'm just concerned that if it takes too long (over night or 24hrs) to cool it could be a bad thing for flavour.

I use a copper immersion coil, inexpensive and effective...it is made from a length of annealed tube.

This might be a really stupid question - Why couldn't you simple use a clean, large bag of ice to crash cool the mash, or a variant of?
