These look like lathed shavings - I've used previously and work okay. No better than dominoes and maybe a lil harsher with more end grain

Good to know. Thanks! I was thinking of eventually ordering a couple of barrels from these guys when I get around to making some whiskey. Never saw spirals before.

Fraser,

I don't know what I can add to the conversation as I am very new at this, but I am currently working with oak spirals. These will give you some nice color in a short time. They don't seem to add any of the aroma or flavor I'm looking for in my bourbon attempt. I made a poor cut on my first attempt at bourbon and didn't like the taste, but it smelled great after aging in a mini barrel. I'm getting nothing comparable after a few weeks of one spiral in a pint of bourbon. I'm going to pull it and try something different.

If you want more exposure you can make your own for a lot less money.

If you are aging in a carboy or something with a small opening putting the sticks in netting makes it easier to remove.

These are strung together like a sausage.

I started my liquid diet and so far it seems to be working! I've already lost two days.

Good information. I'm thinking about trying to put some brandy on oak, but don't have the desire to put them in barrels.
