Best variety of corn for mashing

Best variety of corn for mashing

Postby Boomtown » Sat May 02, 2015 4:01 am

Have been researching corn variety for a while, and am not finding much in the way of advice.

Would anyone be willing to nominate a variety for use in making whiskey? I've a farmer willing to plant a few acres of my choice of variety, but I'm at a loss as to what would be best.

If you'd rather, you can PM me with your recommendations.

Regards,

Before planting try a few varieties.
From what I have read and some research on Uncle Jesse Simple Sour Mash.
The flavour is also affected by the alcohol content.
The higher the alc % the lower the corn flavour.

From memory you don't want to go above 9%

Let us know how you go. :handgestures-thumbupright:

"Best", all by itself, is a hard call. Do you want the most ethanol, the least flavor, the most flavor, the most flavor you like, the easiest to grind, the easiest to separate the wash from the corn solids or will you be distilling on the grain? There's just no end to the variables, and then add in opinions and it really gets complicated.

First off, what do you like to drink or want to make? That's always a good place to start.

You can make whisky in a reflux still, you can make vodka in a potstill,
and you can eat chicken noodle soup with a crescent wrench. But..

It's been suggested that white corn has a higher sugar content, so if everything else was equal you'd go for that. However I'd bet many of the factors Zymurgy Bob mentioned would quickly outweigh the modest sugar boost. It's safe to say the major produces have done all the leg work on yield vs flavor, so if you just want something reliable follow in suit.

Anyway to find out what type?
I started my liquid diet and so far it seems to be working! I've already lost two days.
