How have you earthed your boiler..?

How have you earthed your boiler..?

Postby Cag » Thu Jan 21, 2016 9:44 pm

My weldless element has an earthing point under the guard (it is a standard electrical item). As it will have a gasket both sides of the keg opening there is no guarantee of this terminal also earthing the keg. How do people handle this?

Cheers

I've drilled a hole in the skirt of the keg and have the ground nut there

I also saw somewhere where a guy welded a stainless electrical box enclosure over the elements. I really liked that setup. its on my list of future upgrades to mine as well!

elec box.jpg

heres one like I had in mind from amazon. you can get face plates for them as well. then just ground right to the inside, and covers all exposed wires!

This site has a good weldless solution - http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/heating-elements . It uses the box in Castle's post. I use a somewhat abbreviated version for my stock pot boiler. Instead of the metal box, I use something I cut from a blank ss wallplate for attaching the ground wire - looks like a big washer with a tab sticking out the side with a whole drilled in the tab with a small bolt to hold the ground wire.

The website has a really good tutorial with a complete parts list with links to places like ebay and Amazon for the parts. The tutorial goes into great detail with lots of pictures.

Some element guards have a small hole which you attach the earth wire with a connector, nut and bolt. Once you clamp your element triclamp the boiler metal to metal contact is earthed, via the clamp.

I was all set up to earth the Keg King element when I found the lead already had an earth wire and a check with the multimeter showed good continuity between the earth on the power lead and the body of the keg.

is that the pre-wired one ?
as i have one and yes mine is earthed but i check it fairly often

most of the get a "sparky to wire" elements would need to be earthed when installed

OK, I am definitely going to run an external earth to the keg. The element guard has a terminal point on the inside, however it is a bolt which goes right through from the outside so I have put a terminating tag and I will attach to that and screw the other end to the keg skirt. Thanks for all the thoughts.

Sorry, that was very mangled, I was trying to say, the element guard has a place for an earth on the inside. It is a bolt which comes through from the outside. I have put a terminal under the bolt on the outside and will run an earth from there to the keg. Mmm, is that much better..?
